Fiat will turn the Panda into a family of low-cost cars for the global market

At the Geneva Motor Show, the Fiat brand, part of the Stellantis corporation, presented five concept cars — in the next four years, all of them will turn into production models of the budget Panda family and will be sold all over the world.

The current third-generation Fiat Panda subcompact hatchback has been in production since 2011, it is morally and technically outdated, but thanks to its low price it is currently the most popular new car in Italy, and second place on the list of Italians' favorites is the Romanian budget hatchback Dacia Sandero. The “third” Panda is not yet planning to retire, but the fourth generation model in cross-hatchback format will debut next summer — the premiere is scheduled for July 11, when Fiat will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its founding.

Today at the Geneva Motor Show it was announced that Panda will turn into a sub-brand within Fiat and will become a kind of analogue of the Romanian brand Dacia as part of the Renault Group, that is, it will be responsible for the most widespread and affordable models, and, unlike Dacia, the new Pandas will be sold all over the world, although it is clear that the main markets will be Europe and Latin America, where Fiat's position is traditionally strong.

The concepts shown in Geneva are an announcement of future members of the Panda family, there will be five of them: a basic cross-hatchback, a pickup truck, a liftback, a crossover and an adventure camper. By 2027, all concepts will turn into production models, unified in design and platform. The platform has not yet been named, but most likely it is a Smart Car, already familiar to us from the new Citroen C3 for Europe. Power plants will be hydrocarbon, hybrid and electric to choose from.

Fiat declassified the design concept for new models back in the spring of last year, but now it can be seen on specific models. The essence of the new approach is the aesthetics of constructivism combined with a modular approach and modern environmentally friendly materials. All new Pandas will have the same interior design, with a front fascia reminiscent of the oval track roof of the former Fiat plant in Lingotto (one of the districts of Turin), but the configuration of each car will be customizable using add-on modules and interchangeable trim parts.

City Car

The new basic cross-hatchback (City Car) at the concept stage is decidedly different from the car we saw in the recently leaked patent images of the 2021 model, so Fiat may surprise us on July 11.

A pickup truck, a liftback (Fiat calls it a fastback), a crossover and an adventure camper are noticeably larger than a basic cross-hatchback, while at the concept stage, a pickup and a liftback are essentially the same car, it’s just that the liftback has a closed rear part of the body.< br />

Crossover (will Duster's biggest competitor) and the adventure camper are also essentially the same model, but the camper is taller, more brutal, more versatile and more spacious. The modular approach to the development of the upcoming Panda family is clearly demonstrated in Fiat's Youtube video.

Whether Pandas will be able to compete with Dacia models, time will tell, but the application is powerful in any case — we are waiting for new details.
