
BUDAPEST, 26 Feb. The Hungarian Parliament elected the Chairman of the Constitutional Court, Tamás Shuyok is the country's president for five years.
Shuyok's candidacy was supported by 134 deputies, and five were against. Opposition parties did not take part in the voting. The meeting was broadcast on the parliament website. It was also announced that Shuyok would take office on March 5.
For presidential elections, it is necessary that the candidate is supported by at least 2/3 of the deputies. The ruling parties account for 133 deputies out of 199. The president of the republic is elected by parliament for a term of five years.
Earlier at a meeting on Monday, parliament accepted the resignation of the previous president, Katalin Nowak, who left office after a scandal with the pardon of a man involved in pedophilia .
The meeting was attended as guests by ex-presidents of Hungary Pal Schmitt and Janos Ader, as well as members of the European Parliament from Hungary.
