Transnistria turned to Russia with a request to help in the conditions of the “economic blockade” by Moldova

The Congress of People's Deputies of all levels of the self-proclaimed Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic appealed to the Federal Assembly with a request for help in the conditions of the “economic blockade” from Moldova. An online broadcast of the congress is published by the Pridnestrovie News website.

According to the deputies, Moldova “actually launched an economic war against Transnistria, deliberately creating the preconditions for a multi-million dollar budget deficit.” Congress delegates claim that Chisinau is blocking the supply of medicines and medical equipment, “evading political dialogue” with the authorities of the self-proclaimed republic, and also creating “preconditions for criminal prosecution of literally every citizen of Transnistria.”

What exactly Russia's assistance should consist of was not specified at the congress. At the same time, the deputies note that more than 220 thousand Russian citizens live in the region, and Moscow “participates in the peacekeeping mission on the Dniester and is a guarantor and mediator in the negotiation process.”

The initiator of the appeal was the head of the self-proclaimed Transnistria Vadim Krasnoselsky. Speaking to the delegates of the congress, he said that “the policy of genocide is being applied against Transnistria [by the Moldovan authorities].” Among its signs, he identified “economic suffocation, physical destruction of part of the people, denial of legal protection, attempt to forcibly plant [Romanian] language».

The resolution was also sent to the UN, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, the European Parliament, the Committee of the Red Cross and the UN Secretary General.

The last such congress of deputies of all levels in Transnistria was held in March 2006 after the “referendum”, in which 97% of the region’s residents spoke in favor of its independence with the prospect of joining Russia.

At the beginning of 2024, the Moldovan authorities introduced customs duties on products imported to Transnistria. Relations between Chisinau and the capital of the self-proclaimed republic, Tiraspol, worsened in 2020, when the pro-European Maia Sandu was elected head of Moldova.
