
ROME, 29 Feb. Italian film director and screenwriter Paolo Taviani, who together with his brother Vittorio (1929-2018) won many international awards, has died at the age of 92, the newspaper il Messaggero reported.
The director passed away in a Roman hospital after a short illness. After the death of his older brother Paolo Taviani in 2022, he made the film “Farewell Leonora” about the funeral and repose of the remains of the writer Luigi Pirandello.
In 1977, the film director brothers received the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for the film «The Master Father» based on the autobiographical book by linguist professor Gavino Ledda about the struggle of a young man with his own father.
In 1982, the Taviani brothers, in collaboration with Tonino Guerra, shot the parable film «The Night of St. Lawrence.» It tells about Tuscan peasants during the last period of World War II and is inspired by episodes from the life of the directors' father.
The film was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for an Oscar.
The Taviani brothers shot two films based on the works of Leo Tolstoy. For the film «Resurrection» they received the main prize at the Moscow International Film Festival in 2002.
