MOSCOW, March 4 Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal said that Kiev does not intend to negotiate with Russia on extending the agreement on gas transit to Europe, action which expires at the end of 2024.
The head of Naftogaz of Ukraine, Alexey Chernyshov, said at the end of October that Ukraine does not intend to renew the agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe, which expires at the end of 2024.
“With regards to transit. We are not going to negotiate (with Russia. — Ed.), continue and sign the agreement. But we have repeatedly had negotiations with European leaders. If European countries act as transit countries for their gas, we are ready to provide such a service If not, then we will use the gas transportation system for our purposes,” Shmygal said at a press conference broadcast on the Cabinet’s YouTube channel.
In May 2022, Ukraine stopped receiving gas for transit through the Sokhranovka gas measuring station, citing the fact that it is under the control of Russian forces (on the territory of the LPR). As a result, there is only one entrance left for gas transit to Europe — the Sudzha GIS. Gazprom stated that transferring all volumes to Sudzha is technologically impossible. Gazprom official representative Sergei Kupriyanov said that the company supplies gas through Ukraine to the Sudzha gas station — 41.5 million cubic meters as of February 18. At the same time, the transit agreement between Gazprom and Ukraine assumes that the guaranteed daily pumping volume (on both sides) from 2021 is 109.6 million cubic meters.
Previously, the media reported, citing sources in the Ukrainian government, that Ukraine was not going to renew the gas transit agreement. European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said she notified Ukraine that the EU is not interested in extending the agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe, which expires at the end of 2024.
