From March 1 to March 3, we entered the Borisovo metro station (this is the closest station to the cemetery where Alexei Navalny is buried) at 27 thousand peoplemore than usual. Mediazona found this out by requesting data on passenger traffic from the Moscow Metro.
This is a minimum estimate, which includes only those who left the cemetery by metro and from this particular station. Mediazona was not provided with current data on the number of people who got off at this station. In addition, such a calculation does not take into account those who came to say goodbye to Navalny by ground public transport, came on foot or came by car.
The largest number of people visited the Borisov cemetery on the day of the funeral: on March 1, 18.6 thousand more people left Borisov than usual. On Saturday and Sunday, about 8.6 thousand more people came to the cemetery, who then left Borisovo.
The funeral service for Alexei Navalny took place on March 1 at the Soothe My Sorrows Church near the Maryino metro station. After this, the hearse with the body and the funeral procession headed towards the Borisovsky cemetery — this is the next metro station and about 30 minutes on foot.
According to the metro, on March 1, approximately 8.5 thousand more people got on the metro at the Maryino station than on average on a weekday. According to Mediazona correspondents who filmed the farewell to Navalny, some people were traveling from Maryino to Borisovo so as not to have to walk (that is, they were partially included in our count), and some were going home after the funeral service. Those who came to church but did not go to the cemetery are also not included in the 27 thousand metro passengers.
The death of Alexei Navalny in IK-3 in Kharp became known on February 16. The politician’s body was given to his family only on the eighth day after his death.
The line of people wishing to say goodbye to Alexei stretched for several kilometers in Moscow. Navalny's supporters also organized memorials in dozens of cities in Russia and abroad.
