The New York Times considered Trump's nomination a tragedy for the United States

WASHINGTON, March 7 Victory of former US President Donald Trump Based on the results of the primary voting for Republican presidential candidates on the past “Super Tuesday” and the subsequent nomination from the party, it is a tragedy for the entire country, the editorial board of the New York Times newspaper believes.
“This is a tragedy for the Republican Party and for the country,” states a published column by the leadership of a leading US publication.

According to the editorial board, the issue of Trump's official nomination from the Republicans for the presidential election remains a «formality» after his victory on Super Tuesday and the decision of his main rival, former US permanent representative to the UN Nikki Haley, to withdraw from the race.

«The party has become a vehicle for Trump's ambitions, and he will almost certainly become its standard-bearer for a third time,» the newspaper said.
As noted, the goal of the Republican Party was to choose one person «at the cost of everything else, including honesty, principles, politics and patriotism.» In particular, according to the newspaper's editors, Republicans are ready to abandon “their promises” of support for Ukraine and commitment to the security of US NATO allies in Europe.

«Trump has demonstrated a disrespect for the Constitution and the rule of law, which makes him unfit to run the (presidential — ed.) office. But when an entire political party, especially one of the two main ones in such a powerful country as the United States, turns into a tool of this person and his most dangerous ideas, the damage affects everyone,” the editorial board writes.

Before Haley's withdrawal from the race, pro-democracy media in the United States devoted significant segments of their publications to her, citing attacks by the former US permanent representative to the UN on Trump. The same sources mentioned the former president mainly in the context of criminal claims against him.
According to American experts interviewed, after primaries in a dozen states on the so-called “Super Tuesday”, Trump will win the Republican nomination. Haley's exit leaves the former president as the only contender to be the party's nominee at the July convention. At the same time, only force majeure can prevent him from doing this: ongoing trials or, for example, health problems.
