MAI has figured out how to increase the flight range of hydrogen aircraft

MOSCOW, March 5 MAI scientists have developed a new technology for cooling the electronic converters of hydrogen aircraft with their own fuel, due to which it is possible to reduce the weight of the aircraft and increase the flight duration, the press reported. university service.
““Scientists from Institute No. 3 “Control Systems, Informatics and Electric Power Engineering” MAI have created a technology that will reduce the weight and increase the energy efficiency of promising aircraft powered by hydrogen fuel,” the message says.
It is noted that scientists are proposing liquefied hydrogen to cool power electronic converters on board aircraft. Thus, according to the developers, it is possible to significantly increase the efficiency of the converter compared to classical types of cooling.

“The creation of an aircraft with a hybrid power plant using hydrogen as a fuel element is a promising direction for the development of the aviation industry. Leading aviation companies in Russia and the world are currently working on projects in this area. Engine hybridization will help reduce the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere and increase flight duration in several times,” the press service quotes graduate student Mikhail Ostapchuk as saying.

He explained that classic cooling systems using air, water or other liquids increase the overall weight of aircraft components. Hydrogen fuel is already on board, so feeding it into the cooling loop would be much more efficient.

«In addition, experiments have shown that ultra-low temperature has the effect of increasing electrical conductivity and reducing pulsations: thereby we increase efficiency and, as a result, reduce fuel consumption, Ostapchuk added.
It is noted that a prototype of such a cryogenic converter has already been tested, and now scientists are working on its implementation.
In addition, this technology can be used not only in aviation, but also in other systems where there are cryogenic temperatures, including in superconducting MRIs or, for example, in thermal power plants using liquefied natural gas.
