MOSCOW, March 10. The method of stealing money through the screen of a smartphone, invented by scammers, is simple but effective: everything is based on social engineering methods, Shamil Magomedov, head of the department of “Intelligent Information Security Systems” at the Institute of Cybersecurity and Digital Technologies of RTU MIREA, told the Prime agency.
Acting in pairs, the attackers intimidate the victim within a few calls and convince them to turn on the screen sharing mode when launching the mobile application of one of the most popular banks. In this way, they gain access to someone else’s personal account and money. Almost every smartphone has a screen recording function, so no special technical solutions are required.
Scammers simply manipulate the fear of losing their savings. “Neither anti-virus programs nor specialized software will help protect against this,” notes Magomedov. He recalled that bank employees do not call clients via instant messengers or use video calls, do not require any codes, and certainly do not force them to turn on screen sharing.
