EUobserver: Washington threatens Raiffeisen Bank with sanctions for working in Russia
US authorities are threatening sanctions against the Austrian bank Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) due to its business in Russia, RIA Novosti reports with reference to EUobserver .
The US Treasury Department says it has already sent a warning to the bank, which faces the prospect of losing access to the US financial system if business in the Russian Federation is not stopped. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs Anna Morris has already spoken on this topic with both the Austrian authorities and the bankers themselves. The bank declined to comment.
Raiffeisenbank has been operating in Russia since 1996 under the Austrian Raiffeisen Bank International AG. At the end of last year, the company's staff was about 44.9 thousand people, of which 9.9 thousand were in the Russian Federation.
