SOCHI, March 11 Employees of the environmental interdistrict prosecutor's office in Sochi are checking information about the death of an ostrich in the Arboretum park, the press service of the regional supervisory agency reported.
The death of an exotic bird in a popular dendrological park was reported on the Telegram channel “Sochi Emergency” on March 8. At the same time, photos were published of an ostrich that allegedly died in front of visitors. Some eyewitnesses suggested that the arboretum under its care was poorly maintained.
“The Sochi Environmental Interdistrict Prosecutor’s Office is checking the information,” the agency’s interlocutor said.
Sochi Arboretum Park was founded in 1889 under the leadership of the Russian writer Sergei Khudekov. Plants were delivered to the park from Sochi nurseries, botanical gardens of Crimea, St. Petersburg and Mediterranean countries. In total, about 200 species were collected. The park also houses exotic animals. Today the park is one of the main excursion sites of the resort, which tourists visit year-round.
