Rosatom announced plans to build 17 nuclear power units by 2035

MOSCOW, March 14Rosatom must build 17 nuclear power units in Russia by 2035 in order to increase the share of nuclear generation in the country’s overall energy balance to 25% from the current 20% by 2045, said Alexey Likhachev, general director of the nuclear state corporation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday took part in the solemn ceremony of the start of construction of power unit No. 7 of the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant via video link. During the meeting, the head of state recalled the goal of increasing the share of nuclear generation to 25% from 20% by 2045.

«Under the leadership of the government together with the Ministry of Energy, we understand well what we need — by 2035 we will have to build 17 nuclear power units,» — Likhachev said.

In a conversation with reporters after the ceremony, Likhachev noted that fulfilling the president’s instructions to increase the share of nuclear generation is “a new era” for Rosatom. “Because more than 40 energy capacities have to be built in 20 years — large units, small stations, land-based, floating,” explained the head of the state corporation.
Likhachev noted that not only generation 3+ power units will be built, but also innovative fourth generation units with fast neutron reactors. “There really is enough work for everyone here for two decades,” added Likhachev.
