NEV brand Deepal, owned by Changan, held a presentation in China of its third model — the G318 mid-size crossover, it is equipped with plug-in in a hybrid powertrain and will hit the market in the coming months.
Deepal (aka Shenlan, aka Deep Blue) is still a very young brand; the Changan company launched it in 2022 to produce semi-premium NEV models. Let us remind you that the abbreviation NEV stands for New Energy Vehicle; it combines electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen vehicles. The first-born of the Deepal delirium were the co-platform mid-size liftback SL03 and crossover S7; they are offered with plug-in hybrid and all-electric power plants. In turn, the Deepal G318 crossover debuted as an all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid of a sequential type.
The Changan company itself presented the G318 as a kind of return to its roots: its first passenger model back in 1958 was a small frame SUV in the spirit of the Jeep CJ, and so the Deepal G318 carries the spirit of its historical ancestor: it has a brutal design and is well prepared for driving on rough terrain.

The body is load-bearing, it is made of various types of high-strength steel, the declared torsional rigidity is 45,000 Nm/degree. The wheels in the Deepal G318 are driven by two electric motors (one per axle) with a combined power of 316 kW (430 hp), and a transversely mounted 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 150 hp at the front. It is not mechanically connected to the wheels and operates in generator mode. The crossover accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. The capacity of the traction battery has not yet been announced, but it is known that its full charge is enough for 190 km of electric driving (without turning on the internal combustion engine) in the CLTC cycle or 155 km in the WLTP cycle. The power plant has several off-road modes and can perform a tank turn on the spot. The curb weight of the all-wheel drive Deepal G318 is 2360 kg, the gross weight is 2800 kg, the permissible towed trailer weight is 1.6 tons. Later in the range, simpler single-wheel drive versions are expected.

The Deepal G318 has a five-seater interior. The seats of the first and second row can be folded into half-beds for a short rest on the road, and a full overnight stay can be organized in the trunk, the volume of which with the rear seat backs folded reaches 1747 liters, the standard volume is 818 liters. The high front panel has a fairly large 14.6-inch central multimedia screen; below it there is a narrow microclimate unit with physical keys that can be used blindly. The transmission mode selector is made in the form of a massive handrail on the central tunnel; in front of it there is a shelf with a 50-watt wireless charging for a smartphone.

The Deepal G318 will be offered with a variety of branded travel accessories, including the expedition rack shown in the photos with a built-in LED chandelier. Permissible dynamic load on the roof is 80 kg. To power external household devices at a picnic, a full-fledged household socket with a power of 6 kW is provided.

The price list for Deepal G318 has not yet been published, but pre-orders are already being accepted. In Russia, the Deepal brand is currently not officially represented, but in China it is doing well: in the first two months of this year, according to CAAM, it sold 22,992 cars, which is 124.5% more than the result of January-February 2023 . The goal for the end of 2024 is to sell 450,000 cars worldwide. Last fall, the Deepal brand officially launched in Thailand and is building its own plant here, which should start operating in 2025.
