Rosrybolovstvo will review international fishing agreements

MOSCOW, March 19 Rosrybolovstvo, together with the State Duma and the Federation Council, will analyze fishing agreements between Russia and other countries to identify those that are unprofitable, the head of the department said Ilya Shestakov.
As RBC clarifies, the idea of analyzing intergovernmental agreements in the field of fisheries was put forward in early March by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko.

“I absolutely agree with Valentina Ivanovna. Of course, an audit needs to be carried out. If we talk about fisheries, we will certainly carry out such an audit… Here we need to consider all these agreements as a whole. And, of course, we will look at and analyze them together with both the Federation Council and the State Duma,” Shestakov said in an interview with the RBC TV channel.

The head of the department emphasized that the issue of the benefits of such agreements is complex and they need to be considered in a comprehensive manner. He explains that “we do not have an agreement where we simply allow countries to enter our economic zone and fish from us.” At the same time, there are exchange agreements where the Russian Federation allows entry into its economic zone, but at the same time has the right to enter the economic zone of this state for fishing, as well as agreements under which Russia provides fishing rights in exchange for monetary compensation.
In early March, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law denouncing the 1956 fisheries agreement with Great Britain, which allowed British sailors to fish in the Russian Barents Sea zone. Shestakov believes that this agreement had no meaning for Russia and was more aimed at opportunities for the English fleet.
