The Optiq mid-size crossover will soon join Cadillac's line of electric models; its world premiere will take place at the end of April at the Beijing Auto Show.
Cadillac officially announced the Optiq crossover in November last year, but then the GM press service published only two photos of the exterior. Now, thanks to the Chinese magazine Autohome, we can see the Optiq in detail. The Optiq will be Cadillac's global model, but China remains the main market for the American premium brand, so the Optiq will premiere in Beijing.

Last year, Cadillac's sales in China totaled 183,600 vehicles, down 5.4% from 2022 sales. In the United States in 2023, Cadillac sold 147,214 vehicles (+9.3%). Fortunately for GM, Cadillac sales in China went up in the first two months of 2024: 21,514 cars were sold (+10.2%), but the Chinese are still mainly interested in traditional “hydrocarbon” Cadillac sedans. Cadillac does not yet have any affordable electric models — the Optiq will be the first in this sense.

Chronologically, the Optiq is the fourth model in the electric Cadillac family, which already includes the large 5-passenger Lyriq crossover, the luxurious Celestiq liftback and the flagship three-row Escalade IQ crossover. All of the above models are built on different versions of the Ultium modular platform. All the newest Buick electric cars have the same platform. The closest analogue of the Cadillac Optiq is the Buick Electra E5 crossover, which premiered a year ago.

The GM press service has not yet disclosed the technical characteristics of the Cadillac Optiq, but some of them surfaced last fall in the electronic database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry. Overall length of the Optiq is 4822 mm, width is 1912 mm, height is 1643 mm, wheelbase is 2954 mm. By Russian, Chinese and European standards, a crossover with such dimensions can be called mid-size, but in the USA it is positioned as compact.

The architecture of the five-seat Cadillac Optiq cabin is the same as that of the Buick Electra E5, but adjusted for the higher status of the Cadillac brand, so there is more chrome in the trim and a wider panoramic display that combines instrument and multimedia screens. There are no details about the equipment yet. Trunk volume is about 500 liters.

For the Chinese Cadillac Optiq, two power plants are currently announced, borrowed from the Buick Electra E5 arsenal. The base Optiq has a single 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor on the front axle. In the advanced dual-motor all-wheel drive version, the front electric motor produces 143 kW (194.5 hp), the rear one produces 68 kW (92.5 hp), for a total of 211 kW (287 hp). The battery capacity has not yet been disclosed; similar versions of the Buick Electra E5 are equipped with a 79.7 kWh battery — most likely, the Cadillac Optiq will have the same.
We add that Cadillac’s fifth electric model will be the large three-row crossover Vistiq announced in December.
