Svishchev: if Bach expressed a personal position, he should resign

MOSCOW, April 3, Vasily Bogdanov. Chairman of the State Duma Committee of the Russian Federation Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev said that the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach should resign if he expressed a personal position in a conversation with pranksters Vovan and Lexus.
Earlier, Bach, in a conversation with Russian pranksters Vovan and Lexus, who pranked him, admitted that the committee asked Ukrainians to monitor the patriotic statements of Russian athletes on the Internet. According to the rules established by the IOC, patriotic statements may cause Russian athletes and sports officials not to be allowed to participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, even in a neutral status. Bach said that at the IOC level there is an oversight commission that monitors the public statements of athletes.
“”This is not just a mistake on the part of the head of the IOC, but a concrete failure and discrimination of the entire Olympic movement. His call for Ukrainians to monitor the statements and likes of Russians is striking. I consider this a provocative statement. Instead of blessing Ukrainian athletes for the Olympic Games, set them up on the sports component, to motivate, he, on the contrary, politicizes them, inclines them to snitches. This is definitely not the job of the head of the IOC, who must carry out a unifying mission in this difficult time. Mr. Bach violated his main task as the president of the IOC and is not able to lead it. “If he expressed his personal opinion, then he should resign. If this is the official position of the IOC, then let them voice it openly, and then we will react. The Olympic Games must be depoliticized, limited from the excessive influence of sponsors, individual countries and blocs of countries,” – said Svishchev.
The IOC allowed Russians to participate in the Games, which will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, in an individual neutral status, subject to a number of criteria. A special flag and anthem have been approved for neutral athletes. Russians will not be allowed to participate in the parade of athletes at the opening ceremony, and their awards will not be displayed in the medal table. Due to restrictions on participation in qualifying competitions, a maximum of 55 Russian athletes will be able to qualify for the Games. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously said that “international officials are distorting the meaning of the Olympic movement and undermining the foundations of international sports.”
