MOSCOW, April 9 Conventional Armed Forces Treaty forces in Europe (CFE) has largely lost its viability due to changed geopolitical conditions and the strategic situation, press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“In general, this document (CFE — ed.) has largely lost its viability in due to changed geopolitical conditions and the strategic situation. Therefore, of course, the situation is changing,» Peskov said in response to a question about Turkey's suspension of participation in the treaty.
The CFE Treaty was signed in 1990 by representatives of 16 NATO member states and six members of the Warsaw Pact Organization (WTO). It established group and individual ceilings for NATO and Warsaw Pact countries on five types of Treaty-limited weapons and military equipment (LTME): battle tanks, armored combat vehicles (AFVs), artillery, attack aircraft and attack helicopters. Russia suspended the treaty in 2007 and denounced it in 2023.
