< " The Motherland is calling!”, on which spots appeared, the museum said in its response to the request.
According to the museum-reserve, on the concrete surface of the main monument — the sculpture “The Motherland Calls!” stains appeared caused by the chemical nature of concrete, which is susceptible to fading and efflorescence, exposure to aggressive environmental factors on the surface of the sculpture, as well as the different sorption capacity of the materials used in the restoration of the sculpture.
“The museum-reserve conducts field observations of the condition of the sculpture “The Motherland is Calling!” and informs the customer about the results of observations,” the statement says.
It is noted that restoration work on the sculpture was carried out in 2020, warranty obligations are currently valid. The state customer of the work was the Directorate for Construction, Reconstruction and Restoration, and the contractor was JSC Glavzarubezhstroy.
As Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova previously reported, the work in 2020 was the first large-scale restoration since the construction of the statue: in particular, 11 kilometers of cracks were eliminated, rusted cables were renewed (out of 117 cables, 99 were rusty).
The total length of the memorial complex from the foot to the top is 820 meters. The compositional center of the ensemble is the sculpture “The Motherland is Calling!” — a woman holding a sword in her hand. The figure towers not only over Mamayev Kurgan, but also over the city of Volgograd; it is visible for tens of kilometers. The height of the monument is 85 meters with a sword, 52 meters without a sword. The length of the sword is 33 meters, its weight is 14 tons. The total monument weighs 8 thousand tons. At the base, the sculpture is not secured by anything; it stands under its own weight.
