MOSCOW, April 14 International trade in strawberries in 2023 amounted to at least 900 thousand tons, of which 6% came from Russia, which became the sixth largest importer of this berry in world, follows from calculations based on data from the UN Comtrade platform and national statistical services of other countries.
The main importer of strawberries last year was the United States, which purchased 267 thousand tons abroad, accounting for 30% of global imports. Germany imported 114 thousand tons of berries (13%), and Canada — 108 thousand tons (12%). The top five also included Britain with purchases of 56 thousand tons and France with 54 thousand tons.
In addition to Russia (51 thousand tons), the second five largest consumers of foreign strawberries include the Netherlands (33 thousand tons), Poland (28 thousand tons), Belgium (27 thousand tons) and Mexico (26 thousand tons).
Traditionally, the largest exporter of strawberries was Spain — it supplied about 27% of this berry to other countries. At the same time, in absolute terms, Spanish supplies to world markets fell by 14% — to 247 thousand tons.
Mexico was the second largest seller of berries to other countries, despite a decrease in exports by 8% — to 185 thousand tons. The top three is completed by the United States, which increased exports by 3% to 152 thousand tons. The top five also includes Greece (75 thousand tons) and the Netherlands (62 thousand tons). Turkey, which is the main supplier of strawberries to the Russian market, sold 38 thousand tons on the international market.
