MOSCOW, April 16 Candidate for the post of chairman Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Irina Podnosova, commenting on the possibility of returning the death penalty to Russia, stated that her opinion does not differ from the opinion of the former chairman of the court, Vyacheslav Lebedev.
«I would not express my personal opinion, which coincides with the opinion of Lebedev… This is a question of changing the constitution, and these are your (senators — ed.) powers — we are law enforcers, as soon as the issue is deprived, so we will execute,» Podnosova said at a meeting of the Federation Council committee.
She recalled that now there is a decision of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation that prevents the lifting of the moratorium on the death penalty.
The Higher Qualification Board of Judges (HQJC) previously unanimously recommended the candidacy of the deputy chairman of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Podnosova for the post of its chairman. Podnosova is the only candidate who has submitted documents for the position. The VKKS announced the opening of a vacant position on March 1 after the death of Vyacheslav Lebedev, who headed the court since 1991.
Senators will consider the issue of Podnosova’s appointment at a plenary session on April 17.
