Less risk. Scientists have found a new way to treat kidney cancer

MOSCOW, April 18A new low-traumatic method of treating kidney cancer was proposed by a team of researchers from the Medical Institute of the BelSU National Research University, the press service of the university reported. According to the authors, its use several times reduces the risk of developing postoperative complications when removing a malignant tumor while preserving the affected organ.
As reported at the university, kidney cancer is the leader in terms of growth among oncological urological pathologies, and practically the only option for its treatment is surgical intervention.

Today, kidney surgeries are increasingly performed using the laparoscopic method, in which small punctures of 0.5 to 1.5 cm are made instead of a traditional incision in the abdominal wall, but this is not suitable in all cases, scientists emphasized.

< br />The use of laparoscopy in treatment aimed at preserving the organ of a patient with a large tumor located near the vessels or intrarenal, according to researchers, increases the risk of developing surgical complications: heavy bleeding, prolonged ischemia (decreased blood supply) of the kidney with loss of its function.
Scientists National Research University of BelSU proposed a method of intervention aimed at minimizing surgical trauma at the access stage, while maintaining the advantages of open surgery and reducing the risks of complications.

“Compared with laparoscopy, mini-access can reduce the time of renal ischemia by up to 3.1 times, reduce the volume of blood loss by 2.7 times and reduce the incidence of postoperative complications by 2.3 times with comparable rates of pain in the postoperative period,” are cited. in the message are the words of the head of the study, professor of the Department of Hospital Surgery of the BelSU Sergei Shkodkin.

As the university explained, having studied the features of the vascular anatomy of the kidney, Belgorod scientists determined that in more than 90% of cases the closest point of access to it is located under the tenth rib or in the adjacent intercostal spaces.

The research of Belgorod State University scientists made it possible to develop a new a method of performing an operation that allows for extraperitoneal mini-access to the kidney due to the removal of the tenth rib. The length of the incision for such an intervention is about 10 cm, which corresponds to the total length of the incisions during laparoscopy, but at the same time provides the surgeon with freedom of manipulation.

Specialists successfully applied the developed method to treat 152 patients with renal cell cancer at the Belgorod Regional Clinical Hospital of St. Joasaph.
