
MOSCOW, April 17 The Federation Council voted in favor appointment of Irina Podnosova to the post of Chairman of the Supreme Court.
Her candidacy was unanimously recommended by the High Qualification Board of Judges.
Podnosova became the only candidate who submitted documents for the position. The post of Chairman of the Supreme Court became vacant after the death of Vyacheslav Lebedev, who headed the court since 1991.
At a meeting of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation, Podnosova promised to continue work on humanization. She noted that the court has always supported preventive measures and punishments not related to imprisonment.
Commenting on the possibility of returning the death penalty, the lawyer recalled that there is a decision of the Constitutional Court that prevents the lifting of the moratorium.
Irina Podnosova graduated from law school in 1975 Faculty of Leningrad State University named after Zhdanov. She has been working as a judge since 1990, in 2020 she headed the Judicial Collegium for Economic Disputes of the Supreme Court.
