NEW DELHI, Apr 20 Residents of Bangladesh are experiencing problems with the Internet due to damage to the SEA-ME-WE 5 submarine cable, which provides access to the World Wide Web, Mirza Kamal Ahmed, managing director of the provider company Bangladesh Submarine Cables, told The Daily Star.
The Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) submarine cable system is a 20,000-kilometre submarine cable system connecting 17 countries through points of presence from Singapore to France and Italy and providing a capacity of 1,700 GB/s
«The cable laid on the eastern side, connecting to Singapore, was cut, while the connection on the western side, connecting to France, remained operational,» said a representative of the provider.
According to him, this has led to the fact that out of the 1700 Gbps bandwidth passing through the system, only 100 Gbps bandwidth will be transferred to Bangladesh.
«»The outage was detected last midnight. It will take at least 2-3 days for the connection to be restored,» Ahmed noted.
According to him, a ship will be sent to repair and restore the network.
