MOSCOW, April 30 Unsecured public Wi-Fi points can be used to intercept personal information and passwords, said RuStore lead product manager Alexander Rusnak.
«It is important to remember that public access points at airports and train stations are not secure, which creates a risk of interception of personal data. The best option would be to use password-protected Wi-Fi points in trusted locations, such as a hotel,» Rusnak noted .
He explained that through public networks, hackers can launch a man-in-the-middle attack—a cyberattack that intercepts data sent between two organizations or people.
With such an attack, the cybercriminal gains access to all the victim’s traffic, as well as personal data, application passwords, bank card data and personal messages.
“Fraudsters are able to analyze traffic and also redirect users to phishing resources or sites with malicious software. Attackers can also create their own access points that mimic public ones, for example, using the word Free in the name of the network. In this way, they attract the attention of users and can get everything transmitted data,» the expert added.
Rusnak recommended disabling the automatic connection to Wi-Fi function. According to the expert, you should be especially careful when traveling. “Unless you need an Internet connection 24/7, the optimal combination is to turn off cellular data (mobile Internet) and Wi-Fi,” he noted.
