BEIJING, May 2.Chinese electric car maker XPeng plans to begin pre-sales of the XPeng Aeroht, a modular car with a manned vehicle capable of lifting two people into the air, by the end of 2024, said Wang Tan, vice president of XPeng Aeroht.
Exhibition concept
«We currently have two types of flying cars. At the exhibition we are introducing eVTOL, an electric car with vertical take-off and landing, and propellers that fold inside the car structure and extend when you want to take off,» Wang Tan said on the sidelines of the in Beijing at the Auto China 2024 motor show.
He noted that the eVTOL flying car model presented at the exhibition is still essentially a concept car, but it has been tested in the air.
“Even though this is a concept car, we have already flown it and with a take-off weight of more than two tons there were no problems. However, its flight capabilities, limited by today's technical capabilities and the energy density of the batteries, may not meet our expectations, so We will begin its mass production in a few years,” said Wang Tan.
As the company explained, the eVTOL flying car is essentially designed for the transport system of the cities of the future, since in normal mode it will move along the roads, and if necessary, it will be able to switch to flight mode and perform vertical takeoff and landing in suitable conditions. According to the manufacturer's idea, such a car will be able to fly over crowds of people, various ground obstacles and water obstacles, that is, satisfy the needs of people to travel short distances at low altitude.
Modular flying car
In addition to the flying concept car, XPeng also has a car model that the company is ready to put on public roads, but at Auto China this year he was not brought.
Wang Tan told the agency that the company plans to launch pre-sales of its XPeng Aeroht X3-F modular flying car by the end of this year.
“Firstly, this is a car, but at the same time there is an aircraft in its trunk, that is, you can drive to some beautiful place, park, take the aircraft out of the trunk and fly. I think that by the end of this year we will We will be able to start accepting pre-orders. Initially, we intend to sell it in China, and in the future we will consistently promote this car on the world market,” said Wang Tan.
He noted that, according to preliminary estimates, the price of a modular flying car will be from 1 to 2 million yuan ($138-276 thousand). The company expects to begin delivering to customers in the fourth quarter of 2025.
The company explained that the XPeng Aeroht X3-F modular flying car consists of two parts: a ground module and an air module, which can be automatically separated and assembled. The flying module fits entirely into the rear of the vehicle.
The vehicle seats four to five people, has an improved electrical system that provides increased range and multiple recharging of the flying module, and is a three-axle, all-wheel drive vehicle with a 6×6 wheel arrangement. The company plans to certify it according to China's mandatory automotive standards.
The air module is China's first electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft designed for individual users, equipped with a distributed electric propulsion system, capable of lifting two people into the air. It has both manual and autonomous control modes, as well as a panoramic two-seater cockpit with 270-degree visibility.
One of the world's largest international automobile exhibitions, Auto China 2024, takes place in Beijing from April 25 to May 4 on an area of 220 thousand square meters. This year, Chinese and foreign automakers showed 117 new products, 41 concept cars and 278 cars powered by new energy sources.
