< strong>UN, May 6Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzya called statements by Western countries about their alleged interest in keeping space peaceful as hypocrisy and double standards.
Earlier, Washington and Tokyo prepared a draft UN Security Council resolution calling on countries not to develop nuclear weapons or other types of weapons of mass destruction intended for placement in orbit around the Earth or for installation on celestial bodies, as well as for placing them in space in any other way. Russia in the UN Security Council vetoed the draft resolution — the Security Council did not include in the text an amendment from Moscow and Beijing calling for permanent prevention of the deployment of any weapons in outer space, and not just WMD. China abstained from voting on the resolution; 13 countries were in favor of the project.
As Nebenzya pointed out when speaking at the UN General Assembly on Monday, the United States and Japan were unable to explain why they did not agree to the Russian amendment.
“We’ll answer this question for them ourselves. They don’t want to go for it, because the military doctrines of almost all key Western countries now provide for the military exploration of space. The United States and its allies some time ago announced plans that include the deployment of weapons, in particular strike weapons combat systems in outer space, the use or threat of force in space, from space, and in relation to space and its use for the conduct of combat operations,” Nebenzia said.
“Don’t let yourself be misled today. All statements by Western countries about their interest in dialogue on keeping space peaceful… are just hypocrisy and double standards. Their vote against our amendment on the non-placement of any types of weapons in space is the best illustration of this,” he stressed. He.
According to Nebenzi, it is no coincidence that in all previous years the United States actively resisted any initiatives aimed at preventing an arms race in space.
A striking example, as the permanent representative pointed out, is the long-term blocking by the United States of the Russian-Chinese proposal regarding the draft treaty on preventing the placement of weapons in outer space, which was prepared back in 2008.
