
VELIKY NOVGOROD, May 7The verdict of Antonina Martynova, the wife of the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta — Europe* (recognized as an undesirable organization in the Russian Federation) Kirill Martynov** (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation), will be appealed, her lawyer Sergei Panichev said.
The Novgorod Regional Court today sentenced Martynova to 9 years in prison for the attempted murder of her daughter, committed in 2007. The prosecutor's office asked her for 10 years. The defendant, who had been wanted for almost 16 years after the jury's verdict, did not admit guilt. 
«We will appeal the verdict,» Panichev said.
The investigation, relying on the testimony of an 11-year-old boy who claimed that in February 2007 he saw Martynova throw a child down a flight of stairs, accused her of attempted murder of her 2-year-old daughter ( the girl broke her jaw and suffered a head injury). Martynova stated that it was an accident.
