MOSCOW, May 8. The Federation Council may hold an extraordinary meeting on the 15th May to discuss candidates for the “power bloc” of the Cabinet, a source in the chamber said.
“It can,” the agency’s interlocutor said when asked whether the Federation Council could hold a meeting on May 15 to discuss candidates for ministers of the power bloc.
In accordance with the regulations of the Federation Council, candidates for the relevant positions are previously discussed in the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, the Defense Committee, the International Affairs Committee and the Federal Structure Committee. The committees prepare conclusions on the submitted candidates, the regulations note.
Candidates for the positions of heads of relevant departments are invited to a meeting of the Federation Council committees and a meeting of the chamber. At the same time, the regulations note that preliminary discussions at committee meetings can be held behind closed doors.
Earlier, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko said in an interview that senators no later than May 20 will decide on the candidates proposed by the president for the power bloc of the new government of the Russian Federation and will report their position to the head of state. She believes that there will be no delay in presenting candidates for heads of security and law enforcement agencies.
In March, presidential elections were held in Russia, in which the current head of state, Vladimir Putin, won. By law, the government resigns on the day of the inauguration of the newly elected president, after which the procedure for forming a new cabinet of ministers follows. According to the new norms of the Constitution, the State Duma will approve the chairman of the government, his deputies and ministers, and the president will appoint the heads of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice after consultations with the Federation Council.
