To replace the W12: Bentley showed a new hybrid power plant based on a V8 engine

The new hybrid powertrain for future Bentley cars is called the Ultra Performance Hybrid, its combined output will exceed 750 hp.

In February 2023, the British company Bentley Motors, part of the German concern Volkswagen, announced that production of the legendary 6.0-liter W12 gasoline engine will end in April 2024, and its last carrier will be will be the Batur model. The Batur coupe premiered in August 2022, the convertible of the same name was presented yesterday, at the same time it turned out that Bentley will still have another exclusive model with the W12, which will be released in 12 copies, and the end of production of this engine has been postponed to the summer of this year.< /p>

However, it is clear that the days of the W12 are numbered, so today the Bentley press service revealed that it will have to replace it, namely an Ultra Performance Hybrid power plant based on a V8 gasoline engine. Official technical details are still scarce: it is known that the maximum total output of the Ultra Performance Hybrid will exceed 750 hp, and the electric range will be about 80 km. The most powerful version of the W12 twin-turbo engine on the Batur model produces just 750 “horses” – therefore, the new hybrid models will be even more powerful and will open a new chapter in the history of Bentley.

Bentley already offers hybrid versions of the Bentayga crossover and the Flying Spur sedan, but they use more modest V6 engines with a displacement of 3.0 liters and 2.9 liters, respectively, as internal combustion engines. The Ultra Performance Hybrid will most likely use a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, like the top-end Porsche hybrids on the MSB and MLB Evo platforms, as well as the Lamborghini Urus SE hybrid crossover introduced two weeks ago.

The first photographs of the Ultra Performance Hybrid powerplant suggest that it is no fundamentally different from that of the aforementioned Porsche and Lamborghini Urus SE models, that is, the only electric motor is implanted into an 8-speed automatic transmission. The maximum output of the power plant on the Lamborghini Urus SE is 800 hp. and 950 Nm, but the Bentley brand is one step below Lamborghini in terms of performance in terms of performance (but in terms of luxury, Bentley is the main one), so the peak power of the Ultra Performance Hybrid power plant is likely to be in the range between 750 and 800 hp. pp., although more powerful versions are not excluded in the future.

By 2026, there will be no purely “hydrocarbon” models left in the Bentley lineup – there will only be plug-in hybrids, around the same time The first production Bentley electric car will hit the market, and by 2030 the entire model range of the British brand will be fully electrified, that is, ICE models will become a thing of the past. It turns out that the life cycle of the Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain will be only six years, unless, of course, Bentley plans change, and this may well happen.
