French Defense Ministry: ASMPA missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead has been tested
The French Armed Forces continue to modernize their weapons. French Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on social media X that the country has conducted the first tests of the ASMPA missile, which has been upgraded to carry a nuclear charge. According to the minister's post on social media, the Rafale fighter jet successfully launched the upgraded ASMPA supersonic missile without a payload for the first time.
This test highlights the importance of achieving mission objectives under the Defense Planning Act, especially in the area of nuclear deterrent, he said Lecornu. The minister noted that the successful launch of the missile demonstrates the superiority and operational reliability of the French armed fleet. He also clarified that the test was carried out as part of the Durandal exercise, which takes place from mid-May to mid-June.
The Defense Planning Law provides for significant investments in various areas of defense until 2030. In particular, up to 16 billion euros will be allocated for replenishing ammunition stocks, 5 billion for the purchase of drones and another 5 billion for intelligence work. These measures are aimed at increasing the safety and efficiency of the French army in the face of modern challenges and threats.
France adopted ASMP missiles back in May 1986. In 1997, development of a modernized version of ASMPA began.
