BRUSSELS, May 24. The EU is closely monitoring the situation at the border Estonia and Russia are awaiting clarification from the Russian side in connection with the statement of the Estonian Ministry of Internal Affairs that Russian border guards allegedly removed buoys on the Narva River, according to a statement issued by the European Union's foreign policy service, Head of European Diplomacy Josep Borrell.
«The European Union is closely monitoring the situation… Such actions are unacceptable. The European Union expects explanations from Russia regarding the dismantling of the buoys, as well as their immediate return,» the document states.
Previously, the Police and Border Guard Department under the Ministry of Internal Affairs Estonia said that Russian border guards allegedly removed buoys on the Narva River, which served to delimit shipping routes. The location of demarcation buoys on the Narva River can change every spring, and, according to the agency, this year the Russian Federation did not agree with the proposed locations for about half of the envisaged 250 buoys.
