The opposition of Moldova has denied data on the country's independence from Russian gas

CHISINAU, May 23. The leader of the opposition Moldovan party “Chance” Alexei Lungu believes that the authorities’ statements about the country’s energy independence, in particular from Russian gas, are a fiction, since in fact, Moldova remains tied to traditional sources of natural gas and electricity.
Earlier, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and the Minister of Energy, Viktor Parlikov, stated that the republic had completely ceased to depend on Russian gas.
< br />“Statements about some supposedly achieved energy independence are fiction. Such rhetoric is carried out only with the aim of creating the appearance of work aimed at moving along the advertised European path. In fact, Moldova remains tied to traditional sources of natural gas and electricity… Instead of agreeing on profitable for our country and its citizens, energy supplies with all partners, the authorities are fighting with windmills,” Lungu wrote in his Telegram channel.

He cited statistics according to which in 2023 the country imported 72 million cubic meters of gas from Russia and 419 million cubic meters from Ukraine. “There are no other countries in the import structure. As for electricity. In 2023, most of it, about 78% of the total volume purchased by Energocom, was purchased from the Moldavian State District Power Plant. This electricity was produced exclusively from natural gas supplied by Gazprom,” — reminded Lungu.
Since December 2022, the Moldovagaz enterprise has been receiving gas from two sources — from the state enterprise Energocom and the Russian Gazprom. Russian gas is sent to Transnistria in exchange for electricity, and Chisinau itself uses reserves. Moreover, the contract with Energocom is valid until the end of April. The head of Moldovagaz, Vadim Ceban, admitted that Chisinau will be forced to return to purchasing Russian gas for consumers on the right bank of the Dniester.
