PYATIGORSK, 23 MayThe object that was noticed by residents of the Stavropol Territory in the night sky was presumably the Starlink-2653 satellite, according to the Telegram channel of the AstroAlert astronomers association from Arkhyz.
Last night, footage of an unknown object flying in the night sky over Stavropol, Karachay-Cherkessia, Krasnodar Territory and Kalmykia began to rapidly spread on social networks. The luminous object split into parts and slowly moved in the sky. Some observers suggested that it was the fall of a meteorite or comet, others that they saw a satellite or an “enemy object.” Amateur astronomers explained this phenomenon by space debris that burns at low speed.
«The culprit of the celestial show has been found. This is most likely Starlink-2653 (No. 48665 according to the general catalog of spacecraft). On this map, its last flight path is the lower orbit, turning from white to green and then to the red line, going through the center of the Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean Sea, Turkey, the Black Sea, Sochi and further over the north of the Caspian Sea,” the experts said.
It was predicted that the satellite would fall on May 22 at 21:52 Moscow time, but it happened an hour earlier. Astronomers say the timing has changed to reflect maximum solar activity, when they say Earth's atmosphere inflates.
