PARIS, May 26. Europe has never had so many domestic and external enemies, as now, says French President Emmanuel Macron.
«We have never had so many enemies inside and outside. We are living through an existential moment when our Europe can die — I spoke about this a few weeks ago,» Macron said at an event in honor of the 75th anniversary of the German constitution in Berlin. The broadcast was carried out on the official account of the Elysee Palace in X.
According to him, the main reasons for this are the conflict in Ukraine, as well as economic challenges associated with the decarbonization of the economy.
“We are living through a crisis in our democracies,” he also added, pointing to the growing popularity of nationalist parties.
Macron on Sunday, two weeks before the European Parliament elections, began a three-day official visit to Germany to try to overcome differences among the EU's leading economies on key issues, including energy and defense.
According to an Elabe poll published yesterday, the French far-right National Rally party is in the lead (33%) in the EP elections, while the candidate from Macron's party receives only 15.5% of the vote.
