
MOSCOW, May 26. More than 670 people could have died as a result landslide in Papua New Guinea, the Associated Press reports, citing data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
“The International Organization for Migration on Sunday raised its estimate of the death toll from a massive landslide in Papua New Guinea to more than 670,” the agency said in a statement, citing the head of the IOM mission in the region, Serhan Aktoprak.
On Saturday, the local Post Courier newspaper, citing authorities, reported that more than 300 people were trapped under rubble after a landslide in the village of Kaokalam.
The ABC television channel previously noted that a landslide hit the village of Kaokalam in Enga province, about 600 kilometers northwest of the capital Port Moresby on Friday at 3.00 (20.00 Thursday Moscow time). The landslide also blocked the access road to the town of Porgera, where a large gold mine is located.
