BMW presented the Skytop concept with a twin-turbo V8 engine and features of the BMW Z8

It is possible that the Bavarian company will decide to mass produce a car based on the show car. In this case, it may go on sale in early 2026.

The presentation of the BMW Concept Skytop took place yesterday as part of the Villa d'Este elegance competition (held in Italy). The show car is a two-door with a targa body. The design of the exterior and interior of the concept of the Bavarian brand was carried out by a team headed by Dutch auto designer Adrian van Hooydonk. As the company said, the developers were inspired by cars from the history of the brand — the 1956 BMW 503, as well as the BMW Z8, the production of which started in 1998.

The BMW Skytop concept with a classic shark nose was equipped with a small signature radiator grille in the form of recognizable “nostrils” with a pattern of thin horizontal lines and a chrome trim. On either side of it are slanted, narrow-shaped headlights. At the bottom of the front bumper there is a laconic central and a pair of side air intakes.

The concept received original wheels, traditional exterior mirrors, but there are no ordinary door handles; they were replaced with barely noticeable linings that are located on the top of the doors. The lights have the shape of thin horizontal lines, and large oval exhaust pipes are integrated into the lower part of the rear bumper (one each on the left and right).

The place of the conventional second row of seats in the conceptual two-door is occupied by a large arch that hides the lowered rear window. The roof of the BMW Skytop is made up of a pair of removable rigid panels, which are trimmed with genuine leather (both on the inside and on the outside). Installation and removal of these panels is done manually, and they are suggested to be stored in the luggage compartment.

Most of the surfaces in the cabin are also trimmed with leather, which has a rich reddish-brown color. The design and layout of the instrument panel and the main controls of the BMW Skytop are identical to those of the current 8 Series Convertible, including the same automatic transmission selector as well as the current BMW iDrive infotainment system.

The manufacturer said that under the hood of the BMW Skytop show car is “the most powerful V8 engine in the range.” This means that the concept was equipped with the “filling” of the “charged” version of the M8 Competition without any modifications: let us remind you that we are talking about a 625-horsepower 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine, its maximum torque is 750 Nm.

Nothing officially in the company did not talk about the future prospects of the BMW Skytop. It is possible that it will remain a concept in a single copy. There is a chance for a small-scale assembly: then the batch will be sold to wealthy collectors. However, the Western media suggested that a successor to the current 8 series could be released based on this show car. If such a project is given the green light, the production car could go on sale in early 2026.
