The military court for the second time refused to release General Ivan Popov, accused in a fraud case, from pre-trial detention center

The 235th Garrison Military Court refused to release from the pre-trial detention center the former commander of the 58th Army, General Ivan Popov, accused of fraud on an especially large scale (part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code). This was reported by a Mediazona correspondent from the courtroom.

Popov has been in pre-trial detention since May 17. The investigation asked to release him under house arrest.

The court was supposed to consider this petition on May 24, but the hearing was postponed — on the same day, the 2nd Western District Military Court considered the defense's appeal against Popov's arrest and did not release him from the pre-trial detention center.

Popov’s arrest became known on May 21. According to investigators, the major general was involved in the theft of more than 1,700 tons of “rolled metal products purchased by the military-civil administration of the Zaporozhye region for the equipment of engineering defensive structures on the line of combat contact.” The damage is estimated at more than 130 million rubles.

Popov participated in the war with Ukraine. In 2023, he recorded an audio message in which he said that he had been removed from his post as commander of the 58th Army after reporting problems at the front, and sharply criticized the Russian military leadership.
