First Deputy Committee of the Federation Council on Defense and Security, former Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Colonel General Viktor Bondarev answered the question about the possibility of Russia using tactical nuclear weapons. The topic is being vigorously discussed in the media in connection with the decisions of Western countries to allow Ukraine to launch strikes deep into Russian territory and in light of the conduct of exercises in the Russian Federation on the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons.
«I would refrain from discussing any targets for attacks using tactical nuclear weapons,” the senator said in an interview with News.ru, adding that such weapons can only be used as protection.
At the same time, Bondarev emphasized that Russia has advanced launch systems, so special ammunition , having taken off in response, they can land on enemy territory much faster than their own can reach Russian soil.
The senator also noted that in Russia, an early detection and warning system about the missile threat has been built at a fairly high level.
