In Moscow The Pletnev City Clinical Hospital, specializing in the treatment of patients with cystic fibrosis, will be repurposed as a hospital for participants in the war in Ukraine, a source familiar with the situation told Novaya Gazeta Europe.
According to the publication’s interlocutor, after this the hospital they want to close it completely — when this will happen and for what reason is not specified. As Novaya Gazeta Europe writes, the community of cystic fibrosis patients has confirmed that patients have already begun to be hospitalized at the Research Institute of Pulmonology and the Sechenov University Clinic in Moscow.
The publication notes that the Pletnev City Clinical Hospital is the only hospital in Russia specializing in in the treatment of patients with cystic fibrosis. This is a severe hereditary disease in which thick mucus (mucus) accumulates in the lungs and other organs, leading to the spread of infections. Patients have impaired breathing and digestion and need constant therapy.
New Europe emphasizes that people with cystic fibrosis in Russia do not receive proper treatment due to Federal Law No. 44, which gives priority to Russian pharmaceutical companies producing generics in the market. Unlike original foreign drugs, they are poorly purified.
The website of the Pletnev City Clinical Hospital says that the hospital's pulmonology department has the ability to hospitalize up to 15 patients with cystic fibrosis at a time. According to the register of patients with cystic fibrosis, in 2021 (there are no more recent data), 3969 patients with this disease were registered in Russia.
