MOSCOW, June 5 Temporary ban on obtaining asylum in the USA for illegal migrants from Mexico threatens to weaken support for American President Joe Biden within the Democratic Party and among a number of voters, American media write.
On Tuesday, the White House said Biden was introducing a temporary ban on asylum seekers in the United States for migrants crossing the border illegally with Mexico. The corresponding measure will only come into force when the number of illegal border crossings exceeds a certain limit. Now, according to the White House, this is exactly the situation.
«The move (by the president — ed.) has infuriated some Democrats, who claim that Biden has caved in to Republican demands, ignored immigration laws and could alienate part of the Democratic electorate,» the Washington Post writes.
At the same time, as the publication notes, a number of Democratic legislators believe that the measures taken by the head of state are not drastic enough. Others are of the opinion that the new restrictions are too harsh.
NBC News emphasizes that Biden's migration policy may deprive him of some voters originally from Latin American countries. According to the channel, any fluctuation in their support in the presidential race with such a small gap could have consequences for the candidates. At the same time, more and more Latinos are confident that the Republican Party and its candidate Donald Trump can provide better border protection.
«Many Latino voters use immigration as a litmus test, viewing those who are anti-immigrant as those who are anti-Latino,» the station reported.
Record levels of illegal migration have been recorded in the United States for the last three years while Biden has been in office. In December 2023, Border Patrol officials recorded 302,000 illegal border crossings, the largest number in a single month.
