ST. PETERSBURG, June 6. The May frosts did not cause significant damage to the agriculture of the Kaluga region, although they damaged some crops, Governor Vladislav Shapsha said in an interview at SPIEF.
The head of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Oksana Lut reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin that frosts led to the death of more than 1 million hectares of crops — this is about 1.2% of the total area, but currently the vast majority of these areas have been replanted. 
“We are a region of risky agriculture, the Non-Black Earth Region. Thank God, frosts did not affect our winter crops or oilseeds, but they damaged, of course, already blooming orchards and berry fields. Here, of course, damage was caused. And we are now discussing with our agricultural business , how to help him in this situation, what needs to be done for this,” Shapsha said.
According to him, the damage was caused to apple orchards — several hundred hectares of them were damaged in the region. But the extent of the damage is still unclear. “But once again, this is not critical for us, since after all, we are not a region for which the main agricultural product is the production of apples,” noted the head of the Kaluga region.
He emphasized that one of the main types of agriculture in the region is growing vegetables in closed ground.
“»Here we produce tomatoes and cucumbers in Lyudinovo — 120 hectares of closed soil. No frosts affected it. Now we are building another such large complex in the Sukhinichi district. So, in this sense, we are still insured against the vagaries of nature «, the head of the region emphasized.
Shapsha added that the Kaluga region in the agricultural sector primarily develops livestock farming, and in this matter, according to him, there are no problems with frosts.
