ST. PETERSBURG, June 6The situation with maintaining contacts between Russian scientists and colleagues from international scientific organizations is becoming more complicated — the US authorities are increasingly pressuring foreign researchers to break off cooperation with Russia, said Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Vice President of the National Research Center «Kurchatov Institute» Academician Vladislav Panchenko.
At the level of international organizations, many contacts between Russian scientists have been maintained, Panchenko noted, speaking at the session «New Horizons of Scientific Diplomacy in Conditions of Uncertainty: What Can Be Done Right Now?» at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2024. 
“But, apparently realizing this, the United States is putting more and more pressure on it. The situation is becoming more complicated. Just yesterday I learned information that the American Chemical Society, on the recommendation of its government, is introducing restrictions on co-authors who publish with our authors,” Panchenko said. According to him, in fact, things are moving towards “breaking off contacts at such a personal intellectual level.”
At the same time, foreign scientists are collaborating with Russia in international space organizations, in the ITER international thermonuclear reactor project, Panchenko added. But these are separate episodes, he clarified. “Overall, the situation is getting more complicated,” he said.
According to Panchenko, in these conditions, Russia needs to concentrate as much as possible on the development of its own world-class scientific centers.
