Earlier on Sunday, Hadi Tahan-Nazif, a spokesman for Iran's Observatory Council (the highest house of parliament that oversees elections), said live on state television that the council had completed vetting the candidacies of those registered to participate in the country's early presidential election scheduled for June 28. after the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash.
“The pre-election campaign of presidential candidates officially began from the date of announcement of their names by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and will end 24 hours before the start of voting, that is, at 8.00 (7.30 Moscow time) on the morning of June 27,” Iranian state television IRIB quoted Eslami as saying.
Another state agency, Mehr, reported that the candidacies of two prominent Iranian politicians — ex-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and former parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani, whose possibility of participating in the presidential elections at the end of June was one of the main intrigues — were not approved by the Supervisory Board. , which means they were not included in the final list of candidates.
New presidential elections, according to Article 131 of the Iranian constitution, must be held within 50 days from the announcement of the death or incapacity of the president and the transfer of his duties to the first vice president . This position is currently held by Mohammad Mokhber.
According to the approved election calendar, the registration of candidates took place from May 30 to June 3, and the verification of candidates' eligibility took place from June 4 to June 9, after which the final list of names of candidates was announced .
The election campaign will be carried out for two weeks — from June 9 to the morning of June 27. A day before the elections, a “day of silence” will be declared, during which time campaigning is prohibited. The presidential elections will take place on June 28. The second round, if necessary, will take place on July 5.
