RIA Novosti: scientists have recorded an unusual repeating signal from space

Australian scientists have recorded a strange repeating signal, presumably emanating from a neutron star.

As reported by RIA Novosti, the signal was recorded using the Pathfinder telescope Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder in Western Australia. As astronomers Manisha Caleb and Emil Lenk explain, the signal is not uniform – it can present a series of long bright flashes or short ones that are about 26 times fainter. The switching interval is 54 minutes.

Presumably, the source of the pulse could be a highly magnetized neutron star that has reached long rotation periods. However, it is possible that a “white dwarf” star, emitting coherent radio emission, like a neutron star pulsar, may be involved in the pulse.
