Serial versions of the electric crossover smart #5 have surfaced in the electronic database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry; it will go on sale in the second half of this year.< br/>
Smart #5 debuted in April at the Beijing Auto Show as a concept on wide, “toothy” tires and was generously hung with off-road equipment (vegetable guards, expeditionary roof rack, LED “chandelier”, metal underbody protection), but the serial crossover, as we expected , lost all this, that is, turned into an ordinary SUV.
The smart #5 crossover is the third model of the smart Automobile company, founded in 2019 as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely. Geely holding is responsible for the development and production of new smart models, and Mercedes-Benz helps with the design; all new smart models are fully electric and produced in China. The first model of the smart brand after the relaunch under the wing of Geely was the subcompact smart #1 crossover, which debuted in April 2022. It is based on the SEA modular platform, well known from other brands and models of the Chinese holding. The slightly larger coupe-like smart #3 crossover, which premiered a year later, received the same platform.

Official information about the smart #5 platform not yet, at the concept stage it was reported that the crossover has an 800-volt electrical architecture and a battery with a capacity of more than 100 kWh, which can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes. The range on one charge is 700 km on the CLTC cycle or 550 km on the WLTP cycle. Most likely, the platform of smart #5 is the same SEA, but in a more advanced and expensive version.

Chinese magazine Autohome reports that the smart #5 will be offered in single-engine and dual-engine versions. The power of single-engine versions is 250 kW (340 hp) or 267 kW (363 hp). In the standard twin-motor version, the front electric motor produces 165 kW (224 hp), the rear – 267 kW (363 hp); the top-end twin-engine version of Brabus has the same front engine, but the rear engine power is increased to 310 kW (421.5 hp).

The overall length of smart #5 is 4705 mm, width — 1920 mm, height — 1705 mm, wheelbase — 2900 mm. The standard wheel size is from 18 to 21 inches. So far this is the largest model in the history of smart, but perhaps there will be even larger ones — for example, a family single-volume car. Additional technical details and the interior of the production smart #5 will be declassified in the coming months.

We would like to add that in China, things are not going well for the smart brand: in the first four months of this year, according to CAAM, it sold 5,589 cars here, which is 67.3% less than sales in January-April 2023 . For China, the new smart electric trains turned out to be too expensive — analogues from local brands are several times cheaper.

In Europe, from January to April of this year, according to JATO Dynamics, 9,977 new smart cars were sold (+31.2% compared to last year), but the brand may soon face increased duties in the EU on Chinese-made electric vehicles , and the original business plan of smart Automobile did not include localization of assembly in Europe.
