MOSCOW, June 13 Construction of a huge Chinese port Chancay in Peru illustrates the diplomatic vacuum that the United States has left in Latin America after it concentrated all its resources on Ukraine and the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing US ex-officials.
«Former US officials say the project underscores the diplomatic vacuum the US has left in Latin America as it has concentrated resources elsewhere, most recently in Ukraine and the Middle East,» the newspaper writes. Eric Farnsworth, a former senior State Department diplomat who now heads the Washington office of the Council of the Americas think tank, said the new port advances China's interests in South America in new ways and creates a «gateway to global markets.» At the moment this is not just a commercial issue, it is a strategic issue.
Earlier, Peruvian Ambassador to Moscow Juan Genaro del Campo Rodriguez said that the new huge seaport of Chancay, which is currently being built in Peru, will be put into operation in November. The port is being built with funds from the Chinese company COSCO and the Peruvian Volcan.
