The St. Petersburg City Court received a criminal case against six Viasna activists; they are accused of six counts

The St. Petersburg City Court received materials from a criminal case against six participants in the “Spring” movement; information about this appeared in the court’s database, Mediazona drew attention.

The court will consider the merits of the case against Anna Arkhipova, Evgeny Zeteev, Yan Ksenzhepolsky, Vasily Neustroev, Pavel Sinelnikov and Valentin Khoroshenin. The date for the first meeting has not yet been set.

Arkhipova is accused of six criminal articles: on participation in an NGO that infringes on the rights of citizens, creation of “extremist » community and participation, on public calls for activities directed against state security, on “inclination” to mass riots , humiliation of the honor and dignity of veteransand distribution of military “fakes” by a group of people motivated by political hatred.

Zateev and Neustroev are accused under the same articles, except for creating an “extremist” community. Three more defendants do not have their articles listed on the card on the court’s website.

Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Viasna has called on supporters to take part in anti-war rallies, and in September 2022 to protest against “partial mobilization.” At the end of the same year, the court recognized Viasna as an “extremist” organization.

In June 2023, activists from four regions were searched, after which they were all taken to Moscow. Zateev, Khoroshenin and Neustroev were brought from St. Petersburg, Ksenzhepolsky from Tver, Sinelnikov from Barnaul, Arkhipova from Novosibirsk. The Basmanny District Court of Moscow sent all six to pretrial detention.

By that time, Zateev and Khoroshenin were already under restrictions imposed on them in another Viasna case — on the creation of an NGO that infringed on the personality and rights of citizens (Part 2 of Article 239 of the Criminal Code). They were forbidden to leave the house at night, use the Internet, attend Viasna meetings and communicate with their comrades. This case was opened after in May 2022, “Viasna” proposed to come to the “Immortal Regiment” rally with portraits of veterans and anti-war inscriptions.

The reason for initiating new cases were posts on social networks “Viasna” published even before the traffic ban. Representatives of Viasna wrote that those arrested “had no relation” to them for a long time.

Vasily Neustroyev is a member of the St. Petersburg regional council of the Yabloko party and a member of the territorial election commission (TEC) No. 61. He said that he was in no way connected with Vesna. According to lawyer Yulia Kuznetsova, the accusation is structured in such a way that “someone prepared some publications and published something,” but nowhere is it indicated how exactly her client was involved in them.

Lawyer Tatyana Solomina, at one of the meetings to extend the arrest of the defendants, said that the prosecution’s arguments about Ksenzhepolsky’s involvement in the crime boil down to the fact that “the accused has two legs, is not in a coma, and therefore he can hide from the investigation,” SOTAvision reported.

In December 2023, a court in Moscow arrested in absentia the coordinator of “Spring” Bogdan Litvin, against whom a case was opened in Russia for six articles. In the summer of 2022, Litvin was put on the wanted list. In the fall of the same year, the Ministry of Justice declared the activist a “foreign agent.”
