MOSCOW, June 20 The Latvian National Theater has canceled the tour of Dmitry Krymov’s play “Notes of a Madman” with Chulpan Khamatova, the portal LSM.lv reported with reference to the theater management.
The play “Notes of a Madman” with Khamatova and Maxim Sukhanov was supposed to be shown on the stage of the National Theater in September as part of a tour, but the venue terminated the lease agreement.
In a statement to the media, the theater director Maris Vitols said that «the stage of the National Theater is not a suitable place for touring performances in Russian» during the conflict in Ukraine, so the theater is introducing a «moratorium on touring in Russian» until the end of the conflict.
The portal Delfi.lv, citing sources, also reports that Khamatova may leave the New Riga Theater, where she worked after moving to Latvia. The theater itself did not officially confirm the information about the dismissal, but noted that “the form of the actress’s work in the theater may change next season.”
In February 2023, the New Riga Theater announced that it was canceling a play based on Nikolai Gogol’s play “Old World Landowners” with Khamatova in the title role a few days before the premiere due to “creative failure.”
After the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, Khamatova left Russia for Latvia and resigned from the Sovremennik Theater. In an interview with Latvian television, she stated that she never took her title of People's Artist of the Russian Federation seriously, does not know what it gives, and considers it a “Soviet relic.”
