
MOSCOW, June 20 Estonian opera singer, People's Artist of the USSR Margarita Voites died at the age of 87, reports the ERR television and radio company.
“Estonian opera singer Margarita Voites has passed away at the age of 87,” the message says.
According to ERR, Voites was born in Moscow, and later her family returned to Estonia. The singer, who had a coloratura soprano, gave concerts both in the USSR and in many other countries of the world. In 1969, Voites became the prima donna of the Estonia Theater for 20 years, where one of her most famous roles was the title role in the opera Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti.
It is noted that she became the first Estonian singer invited to perform at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow in 1973 and give a solo concert in the central concert hall «Russia», and in 1979 Voites was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR . According to ERR, Voites ended her theater career in 1990, but decided to continue working as a singer.
The cause of Voytes’ death is not known.
