DUSHANBE, June 20, Lydia Isamova. President Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon on Thursday signed the law “On Celebrations and Ceremonies”, prohibiting the wearing of clothing “alien” to the culture of Tajikistan, the press service of the head of state reports. Residents of the republic began to complain on social networks
“After the country’s Senate adopted amendments to the law “On Celebrations and Ceremonies”, prohibiting the wearing of clothes “alien” to the culture of Tajikistan, the president signed it,” the press service says .
In addition, the law on celebrations and ceremonies now provides for a ban on “idgardak” (a kind of carols for children on the holidays of Ramadan and Kurban Bayram).
The draft of this law was submitted by the President of Tajikistan to parliament, deputies of the lower house accepted it, and senators approved it on June 19.
There is a fine for non-compliance with this law, but it is still not precisely specified which types of clothing are considered “alien to the national culture” and are prohibited from sale and wearing.
Many women in the country complain on social networks that government officials stop women in hijabs on the streets and demand that they take off their hijab or wear it as a headscarf. There were also cases when women wearing hijabs were not allowed into clinics and hospitals. In addition, there were raids on the capital's clothing markets, where sellers were prohibited from selling hijabs.
